Precision Grades

What do SKF bearing precision grades P0, P6, P5, P4, and P2 mean?

SKF precision grades follow the ISO 492 standard (equivalent to ABEC in North America). From lowest to highest precision:

Grade Tolerance Level Typical Application
P0 (Normal) Standard General industrial machinery
P6 Higher than P0 Electric motors, pumps
P5 High precision Machine tool spindles
P4 Very high precision High-speed spindles, grinding
P2 Ultra-high precision Precision instruments, aerospace
How do I choose the right precision grade for my application?

Consider three key factors: rotational speed, vibration tolerance, and dimensional accuracy requirements.

  • For general applications up to 3,000 rpm: P0 is sufficient
  • For 3,000-10,000 rpm or low-noise requirements: P6 or P5
  • For high-speed spindles above 10,000 rpm: P4 or P2

💡 Higher precision grades cost more and require tighter housing/shaft tolerances. Over-specifying wastes budget; under-specifying causes premature failure.

Does a higher precision grade always mean longer bearing life?

Not necessarily. Precision grade primarily controls dimensional and running accuracy tolerances, not load capacity. A P5 bearing in an application designed for P0 may actually underperform if the housing tolerances are not matched. Life is primarily determined by load rating (C/P ratio), lubrication quality, and mounting accuracy -- not precision grade alone.

Clearance Selection

What are SKF internal clearance groups (C2, CN, C3, C4, C5)?

Internal clearance refers to the total movement of one bearing ring relative to the other. SKF groups from smallest to largest:

C2

Smaller than normal

CN

Normal (default)

C3

Larger than normal

C4

Larger than C3

C5

Largest

When should I choose C3 clearance instead of standard CN?

Choose C3 clearance when any of the following apply:

  • 1High operating temperatures -- thermal expansion reduces running clearance; C3 compensates
  • 2Heavy interference fits -- tight fits on shaft/housing reduce clearance significantly
  • 3High-speed electric motors -- especially motors operating above 80°C ambient
  • 4Vertical shaft applications -- gravity effects on clearance distribution
What happens if I use the wrong clearance group?

⚠️ Too tight (C2 or CN in hot application)

  • • Zero or negative clearance under heat
  • • Overheating and seizure
  • • Rapid fatigue failure
  • • Excessive noise and vibration

⚠️ Too loose (C4/C5 in normal application)

  • • Reduced load zone, higher stress
  • • Increased noise and vibration
  • • Shaft positioning accuracy lost
  • • Shorter fatigue life

Installation Methods

What are the recommended methods for mounting SKF bearings?

SKF recommends four primary mounting methods depending on bearing size and fit type:

01

Mechanical pressing (cold mounting)

For small bearings (bore ≤ 80mm). Use SKF TMFT series fitting tools -- never strike the bearing directly with a hammer.

02

Induction heating (thermal mounting)

For medium bearings (bore 80-300mm). Heat bearing to 80-90°C above ambient using SKF TIH series induction heaters.

03

Hydraulic injection method

For large bearings (bore > 200mm). Oil injected under pressure between mating surfaces to reduce friction during mounting.

04

Hydraulic nut method

For tapered bore bearings on adapter or withdrawal sleeves. Provides precise axial drive-up measurement.

Why should I never heat a bearing with an open flame?

Open flame heating causes three critical problems:

  • Uneven temperature distribution -- hot spots cause micro-cracks in the steel, reducing fatigue life by up to 50%
  • Exceeding 120°C -- permanently alters the metallurgical structure and dimensional stability of the bearing rings
  • Grease degradation -- for pre-greased bearings, flame heating destroys the lubricant before installation

⚠️ Always use induction heaters with automatic temperature cutoff at 110°C. SKF TIH series heaters include built-in demagnetization cycles.

How do I verify correct bearing installation before startup?

Run through this pre-startup checklist:

Fault Diagnosis

How can I diagnose bearing failure by sound and vibration?

Grinding / grating noise

Likely cause: Contamination (dirt/metal particles inside bearing). Action: Replace immediately, inspect sealing system.

High-pitched squealing

Likely cause: Insufficient lubrication or wrong lubricant viscosity. Action: Re-lubricate; check lubricant specification.

Irregular clicking / knocking

Likely cause: Spalling on raceways or rolling elements (fatigue damage). Action: Schedule replacement; analyse root cause (overload, misalignment).

Rumbling at low speed

Likely cause: Excessive clearance or loose fit. Action: Check fit tolerances; consider C2 or CN clearance upgrade.

Vibration at specific frequency

Likely cause: Imbalance or misalignment of shaft/coupling. Action: Perform shaft alignment check and dynamic balancing.

What does bearing overheating indicate and how do I address it?

Normal operating temperature should be ≤70°C for standard greased bearings (≤90°C for oil-lubricated). Temperatures above this indicate:

🔴 Over-lubrication

Too much grease causes churning heat. Fill only 30-50% of free space.

🔴 Under-lubrication

Metal-to-metal contact. Re-lubricate immediately.

🔴 Excessive preload

Too tight a fit or incorrect clearance. Review mounting specifications.

🔴 Overload

Load exceeds bearing rating. Verify C/P ratio ≥ 3 for normal life.

How do I identify counterfeit SKF bearings in the field?

Counterfeit bearings account for 15% of the global market. Key identification checks:

  • Laser engraving quality -- genuine SKF markings are sharp and uniform; counterfeits often show uneven depth or font inconsistencies
  • Packaging integrity -- genuine boxes have consistent print quality, holographic labels, and correct part number formatting
  • Surface finish -- genuine raceways have mirror-smooth surfaces; counterfeits often show machining marks under magnification
  • SKF Authenticate app -- scan the QR code on genuine SKF packaging for instant verification

💡 All bearings purchased from SKF China come with full authenticity documentation from our authorized supply chain, eliminating counterfeit risk entirely.
